Jewison, USDA FAS, to give Keynote Address

The Future in Farming:



GREENSBURG – Tickets are now on sale for the Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce 2012 Southeastern Indiana Ag Conference, “The Future in Farming,” scheduled Friday, March 2, at Wolf Theatres. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. and the conference begins at 8:30 a.m.

Tickets are $20 and available from members of the FFA chapters at Greensburg Community High School, North Decatur High School, South Decatur High School and at the Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce, 125 N. Broadway St., Greensburg. You may also purchase tickets by calling the Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce at 812-663-2832.

New this year, local school FFA chapters are participating in a ticket sales competition for the opportunity to earn extra funds for their chapters. The school that sells the most tickets will earn $500, while second and third place will earn $250 and $200 respectively. The top selling FFA member from the three schools will earn $100 for his or her efforts.

“It is our intent to help support the FFA groups at the three schools in Greensburg and Decatur County and this is one way that we can all work together to bring agricultural issues to the forefront,” Chamber Executive Director Jeff Emsweller said.

Tickets include the event, a continental breakfast provided by Realty Executives Maximum Results and a pork chop lunch as served by members of the local Kiwanis Club, break-out speaker sessions as well as keynote speakers and opportunities to visit with sponsors and vendors.

The Keynote Speaker for the event is Michael Jewison , who has been with USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service since 2006, when he started working at the FAS offices in Beijing, China.

In 2007, Jewison moved to Washington and began a position focusing on U.S. - China trade policy. Since mid 2008, Jewison has been working as a grains analyst in the Office of Global Analysis. A native of Minnesota, Jewison spent a significant part of his youth working at family run dairy farms in Janesville and Chatfield. He received his bachelor’s degree in Economics from St. Olaf College, has completed Chinese Studies at the Beijing Language and Culture University, and will soon finish an MBA at Georgetown University. Mr. Jewison speaks advanced Mandarin and currently resides with his wife in Alexandria, VA.

• David Oppedahl, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, discussing land values and credit
• Robert DeFrancesco, III, Wiley Rein, LLP, discussing the ethanol industry in the USA including importing and exporting, including issues he has dealt with first hand.
