The Historical Society of Decatur County will be having its Annual Dinner & Program on Saturday, April 15th at the Greensburg First Baptist Church in the Family Life Center. Dinner will be served at 6 PM. The program will begin at 7 PM. The catered meal costs $20 per person. Additional free seating will be available for those only wanting to attend the program portion of the evening.
The program is entitled "Tales From the Archives...Adventures in Cellulose-Nitrate." Tom Barker will present the program. The subject of the program is 35mm cellulose-nitrate motion picture film. A few years ago Tom was given a collection of 35mm nitrate film clips. The films had been in the possession of John Stafford of Geneva, IN for 50 years. These films were shot in 1927 on the ship that was returning Charles Lindbergh's airplane, "Spirit of St. Louis," back from Paris after his historic first trans-Atlantic flight. At first glance, the films appeared to have deteriorated beyond salvation. However, around two dozen images were saved from the sticky mess. This will be the first time these images will be seen in public for almost 100 years. The process of extracting these images from the nitrate clips was filmed by Tom. That film will be the featured part of the program. Also included in the program are: newly discovered 8mm footage of the 1959 Greensburg Centennial Parade, Sights and Sounds of Railroads in Decatur County in the 1970s and a few other surprises.
Make your dinner reservations by March 31 by calling the Historical Society of Decatur County at (812) 63-2764 or emailing dechissoc@etczone.com. No reservations are required for the free seating after the meal. If you wish to join us only for the program portion, please arrive promptly before the 7 PM start of the program.
